I came home from work to find that PIA had dropped connection with the message "Error: Connection Refused" but my torrent program was still up and running and downloading. The PIA program was still running and hadn't closed, but simply dropped connection. I had, and obviously incorrectly, thought the killswitch would have kicked in and disabled internet traffic.
