Plex has a feature it calls Sync, which allows you to save things to your remote device and your plays, skips, ratings, etc., get synced with your server when you get a data connection back So.. Plex does require a Plex Media Server and Playon requires a PC of some sort. But Plex is more than some sort of channel browser. And sure, a PC can be whatever you want (including a PMS). I just think the two things are very different (Plex vs. Playon). If you don't need a media library, I'd leave Plex out of the loop, because it's not really (primarily) a channel browser. In fact, the pre-release of the new Plex app for Roku doesn't support channels yet. why? Because for most, Plex I have both & use each for different purposes. I use PlayOn to view online TV & other websites & have the record add-on to record streams. I use Plex to stream local media files that I have on a pc I use as a file server. Although Plex does have its own DVR feature, it requires a subscription-based access (Plex Pass). PlayOn is a one-time purchase (I got it for $19.99). It has its problems (such as only working on Windows and unfriendly UI), but the Windows desktop application is able to record from a variety of different streaming services.
